Athenry ( / æθənˈraɪ /; [a] Irish: Baile Átha an Rí, meaning 'Town of the Ford of the King') is a town in County Galway, Ireland, which lies 25 kilometres (16 mi) east of Galway city. Some of the attractions of the medieval town are its town wall, Athenry Castle, its priory and its 13th century street-plan.

Those kings were the Ó Mainnín dynasty, ousted in the 12th C by supporters of the O'Connor kings, who in turn were ousted in the 13th C by the Anglo-Norman de Bermingham overlords.

The history of Athenry pre dates the Anglo Normans as archaeologists also discovered that people lived there in the Bronze Age (2200 to 800 BC) and in the early medieval period, between 500 and 1200 AD, a stone-lined underground passage called a souterrain was discovered dating to that time.

Athenry Castle is a large rectangular building with base-batter, originally containing only a hall on the upper level and storerooms at ground level. The battlements are 13th century with tall arrowslits in the merlons. In the 15th century, these parapets were incorporated into gables at the north and south ends for a new roof.

Very nice medieval castle in Athenry. Part of the medieval city of Athenry, the Norman castle is very well preserved. Built in 13th century the castle looks better than a tower and is surrounded by think, still standing walls. It was built on the shores of the river Clareen and the view is spectacular.
